I remember when I was younger, you were considered "weird" if you loved to play computer games all the time, or were on the internet looking up sites and shit, shit even the media would talk shit about the kids being online.

Then the smartphone came out and everyone and their mom hopped on and the internet became a shithole...

The iPhone 1. HTTP's very own Eternal September.

Not just smartphones, it was the iPhone. That changed way to much and in negative ways.

It wouldn't have sold if there wasn't a market for it. Let's face it, the majority of the population is shit.

I stopped helping people out with tech stuff, altogether. It's not with it. Even if you're an expert at something, everyone still thinks they know better than you, because they heard this one thing that one time from some person at work.

The only people I talk with about security and tech stuff anymore, are my friends that already understand and are in to this shit. If someone doesn't care about their privacy/security by now, they never will. Not in any serious way.

My life is infinitely better for it. So much so, that I take this approach for everything that I'm knowledgeable of, now.

My favorite bumper sticker ever read "Yes, this is my truck. No, I will not help you move."

I'll help in a round about" slightly better then you at it" way, maybe I fix thier problem but they think they did it them selfs so they don't bother me with more questions.

I play dumb when it comes to anything tech related.

"Is AMD better than INTEL?"

"idk"

"But you built your computer dont you know this stuff?"

"No, building computers is just like lego with wires. Just buy whatever is cheaper."

So on the same page. I was always leery of fb and cemented my privacy and secutiry and just turned off as many switches on the site as I could. Pretty much came too late to the party for it myself since listservs and usenet are more my speed, so it was.. umm, interesting when I saw a family member lose employment over the fb comments that had been about work.. Never bothered to load any privacy settings or even have stuff for friends and family only. Never even bothered to look, just started using it with no.. clue? Just disappointing to witness, I'd thought the person was smarter than that.. Can't help you - and what, you've got a Masters in engineering and didn't think to work this out? Oh, NOW it's a different picture, but only after a solid job was lost.

Yup. I set a normie facebook account with max security settings, years ago, hid all content from "the public", and never used it. It's a ghost town built for "corporate diligence" types— to tick off a checkmark, and that's it. I updated the profile pic, every now and then, with my face; just so that they can be certain it's my account, and not have to look any further. The "real" account, that I used for years, never had any accurate information (wrong age, wrong name, incorrect education information, wrong everything).

Used an old greasemonkey script to delete that account, right around the time that I joined voat. Never went back. Now that it's become socially acceptable to not use facebook, I'm glad not to have to update the normie account, anymore.

Sometimes I'll bring something tech related up just to see if anyone else shares that interest, then if no one does I'll drop it

This couldn't have come at a more appropo time for me. I've finally gotten family members to be open to the reality that we live in a propaganda state that does their thinking. Been at this fight for over 20 years and I'm so glad I lived to see it reach critical mass. Sort of a pyrrhic victory at this point, but better late than never.
