A little over 1300 people killed in mass shootings since 2006. 1300. The real question is why do people believe this is even a widespread enough problem that it has to have massive regulation to fix? Why? Because of sensationalism and over the top media coverage every time it happens

Statistically insignificant. Better remove the friggin 2nd ammendment! Next up on the agenda, cougar and shark attacks.

To give some perspective: The same number of people dies in traffic-related accidents every 14 days in the US. Since 2006 roughly 400 000 people have died in traffic.

As for why, big singular events sell more newspapers than small continuous ones because it makes us more scared, rather than the small amount of fear that we eventually get used to and filter away. Another fun example would be nuclear plants vs coal plants. A coal plant produces more harmful radiation per kwh than a nuclear plant (by close to 100 times), and that's when including accidents like Fukushima and Chernobyl.

I keep asking people that get upset about guns and schools what their solution for cars is given that they are killing 30-40 thousand a year and likely more kids as well. They seem to dismiss cars as not a threat.

lots of math and number follow

they dismiss this despite some interesting numbers for an impact. For this demonstration let us say a car weights 2000 lbs and is going 30 mph, that means it hits with a force of 60173 foot pounds of force. Looking at wikipedia .45acp is 386 foot pounds, 5.56x45mm NATO is 1303, 7.62x51mm NATO is 2437. .50 BMG is 13310 to 14895. So some basic math puts a 30 mph car as equal in force transfer as 46 rounds of 5.56, and I belive most AR15s are 20-30 round magazines so it is far weaker then a car though focused on a smaller point of impact. for the other calibers I listed 155 rounds of .45, 24 rounds of 7.62, 4 rounds of .50 BMG. Now just for fun I decided to figure out how fast a 5.56 would have to go to give the same amount of force as the car turns out standard velocity is 3251 ft/s or 2216mph for our car comparison, it would have to be sped up to 20908 ft/s or 14256mph and increase of more then 6 fold.

Since we are talking school shootings let's joke around and do the 5.56 vs a school bus (25000 lbs) doing 5mph in the school parking lot. We get 20893 foot pounds of force. That is about 16 rounds worth of impact.

TLDR: A car at 30mph is equal to 46 rounds of 5.56 worth of impact force, Schoolbus at 5mph in a parking lot is 16 rounds.

Not to mention the fact that coal plants can't produce as much power as a nuclear plant (by a minimum factor of about 10 times).

Then you can look at other nations like Russia or Mexico where gun laws are far stricter... And yet they still happen.

In fact in 2004 in Russia hundreds were killed in a school shooting... Perpetrated by the "Religion of Peace".

Liberals always use "muh Australia" as an example that gun control works. An isolated island/continent with no way in or out without the government knowing. Even then guns still get smuggled in.

Reagan cut mental health care from the federal budget. He did first as governor of California and used that model when he was president. They basically just released a bunch of crazy people and stopped helping people. In 1975 someone like Cruz would have been under a Dr's care.

They told the kids "say no to drugs" for all those years, with the caveat "unless a doctor gives them to you, in which case go wild, its not your fault if you do bad things, just side effects of medication or withdrawal after long term use". Seems like every day another drug comes out that will take the edge off, make life less real more like windows XP background.

Then they added "gun free" zones in the 90s. There were school shootings before, but this law just exacerbated the problem.

You're part of the problem, parroting Fox News talking points. Most of these shooters were already on psychotropic drugs. There are conclusive links between psychotropic drugs and violent/suicidal ideation. For example, they found psychotropic drugs in the Vegas shooters urine but not in his blood, indicating he had recently come down off of meds (which is when studies indicate people are at highest risk for adverse reactions). Antidepressants may double risk of suicide and aggression in children

Despite 27 international drug regulatory warnings on psychiatric drugs citing effects of mania, hostility, violence and even homicidal ideation, and dozens of high profile shootings/killings tied to psychiatric drug use, there has yet to be a federal investigation on the link between psychiatric drugs and acts of senseless violence.

Fact: At least 35 school shootings and/or school-related acts of violence have been committed by those taking or withdrawing from psychiatric drugs resulting in 169 wounded and 79 killed (in other school shootings, information about their drug use was never made public—neither confirming or refuting if they were under the influence of prescribed drugs).

https://www.cchrint.org/psychiatric-drugs/drug_warnings_on_violence/

You wanna know what changed between 1975 and now? Quality of life, and the practice of pumping every man woman and child full of brain altering chemicals.

And of course the "approved" talking points are even MORE meds, or gun control. Seems legit.

The news changed. They don't report news, they report agendas. Granted, they've been doing this for a long while, but gun control is a priority on their agenda.

At best the news is driven by ad revenue so they need to get as many viewers as possible so they pick all the sensational stories and push for what will get you to watch. So it is current events shows fighting for ratings same as sitcoms would if they were to air Friends and Signfield at the same time and compete for viewers. It is not them informing people anymore.

Honestly, it never was. Yellow journalism is an old tactic. BBC was founded on the idea that the profit motive distorts news, but it became propaganda. There has to be a better way...

What changed was that nobody had yet thought of holding kids hostage to pass gun control legislation.

Ooooh, I don't think I have one of those anymore. Had to give it up to work for the Bell System. But don't worry My Joo, we have a solution that will make sure you never have to deal with this again. Some might call it a Final Solution.

What's changed is pretty obvious. You know what else didn't exist in 1985? A vast worldwide network of computers making complete morons instantly famous.

Jus' sayin'.

Yes, lets ban computers next!

I can see it headed in that direction.

First its guns, then cars, then... internet? It still comes back to the mental and emotional health of the individual.

We also didn't have widespread video games back in the 80's. Should we start blaming violent video games for the mass shootings?

It's hard to say whether the frequency of mass shootings has gone up or they simply didn't make the national news in the past, especially the smaller ones. The Charles Whitman shooting is pretty famous and it happened in 1966.

If you are basing your statement on the Wikipedia page of mass shooting then you are reading a very biased view of gun grabbers.
