So many factually incorrect things get hundreds of votes. I've even gone in, commented, and had the submitter admit it was wrong - and people still voted it up and did things like make comments about how the principle was still sound. I started voting just about six weeks ago. Yeah, I went a long time not voting. I only vote down things that are factually wrong or unsubstantiated. I have thousands of downvotes now.

It's just a function of freedom, I think. I just vote and move on. It doesn't seem to help, but it may be a sign for others to see.

It is the "I want to believe" mentality. If it is too good to be true, it is probably false.
