I'd say that in some scenarios the risk of getting cut in half is outweighed by the risk of dying from a sudden stop at the bottom of the shaft.

IIRC there's a giant spring thing at the bottom meant to soften the impact in the case of an emergency like that.

In any case, if you're not crippled, you shouldn't use the elevator anyway. Stairs don't get stuck.

That's a pretty stupid failsafe, since even with a spring you die anyway. Only after you're dead, the thing bounces up again.

Stairs are good exercise as well. I park on the 8th floor of a garage for work and never take the elevator
