Emotions are cheap and easy to manipulate. You don't even need results, just dangling the possibility that a difference will be made and getting those feel good hormones flowing is enough.

Live Aid shows starving kids in Africa in adverts to get you to donate. Emotional thinking gets you a pat on the head from other emotional thinkers and a warm fuzzy feeling inside. This keeps the status quo of "evoke this emotion > get this result (normally money)" going.

If you point out Live Aid has been given money in the millions, probably billions, over 30+ years, yet those same kids who were starving in the 1980s grew up to have breed more starving kids in the 2000s so its not just poverty, and you get treated like Hitler. Critical thinking gets negative emotional responses from people brought up to believe how they "feeeeeel" is more important than actual results, rather than promoting a change in how things are done which takes effort.
