"Hackathon" is more like a workshop where pretty much anyone can contribute. I think the word had it's origins in computer programming, but now all kinds of organizations have hackathons in the spirit of 'let's have everyone in the organization collectively brainstorm.'

I know what it means.

The message that this came with let me know very clearly that "methods" were going to be explained to even the least IT illiterate to hack the systems and social media and "make their progressive voice count"

Because apparently voting one time where one is supposed to is not enough of a voice for them? And accepting they lost, impossible.
