I spent hours trying to find /usr/local since i wanted to add some libraries for development. Turns out OSX intentionally hides the directories, and you need to toggle the visibility flag by command line. This made matters even more complicated, since homebrew installs to that directory. Ughhhh, why cant OSX keep the good bits of Linux. so fucking painful!!!! When I was on Linux, the entire process was so smooth and easy, whatever happened to the OSX motto of keeping things simple

That's the rub. For basic day to day shit osx is awesome. The minute you try to pop open the hood and fiddle with it that all goes to hell.
