That's a bad example. If you take the time to read it, it makes great sense. Compare that to the traditional method:

3 - 7 (impossible, go borrow some from the next number)
4 - 1 -> 13-7 = 6
(4-1) - 8 (impossible, go borrow some from the next number)
2-1 -> (14-1)-8 = 5
2-1 = 1, 156.

If you really spell out the steps of traditional subtraction, it's quite convoluted. Not difficult with pencil and paper, but there are a lot of steps.

Ok, I had some fund deciphering a few of those. It was a welcome distraction from the brain flattening banality of whatever I'm doing all day and night.

Those examples may seem crazy but the concepts can be employed selectively to increase the efficiency of equations when doing mental math. The key being to save steps and streamline thoughts, then just use long division to eyeball the last few digit places instead of working out like 5 separate little things for 27-16.

My understanding of common core is that a lot of the schools are now mandated to buy and update text books on a regular basis (something like every 5 years). Those textbooks and the formulas used (the formulas a lot of us were raised using) are copyrighted. The cost of updating books from a monopolized source drove the system we see now.

Basically they have developed new formulas or wrote out a new system for solving formulas to avoid infringement issues. (I'm not saying they are good because they are a fucking joke). They basically decided to side with the all mighty dollar and accept retarding our future generations instead of paying the exorbitant amount updating texts.

I heard all of this from a professor at the college in our community and it made sense to an extent. I also agree with the brainwashing thing though, they are dumbing down our future generations because they make for useful idiots. Common core is a joke. The second they pull some of this bullshit on my kids in regards to marking off using simplified math to solve formulas, I will be pulling them out of the public schools. Luckily we are in a smaller community and things haven't changed as fast as other places.

Back when I was in school (mostly around highschool) show your work was the big thing but most teachers tended to grade it as either 2 or 3 points per problem and then 1 or 2 was for the work and another 1 for the answer. Not showing the work would mean you got 33 or 50%. That I choose to accept as I saw no need to do all the little steps out on paper when I could combine them so my grades suffered. When asked during parent teach conferences the teachers would admit that I knew the subject and what I was doing it was just lack of writing out the work on homework that was hurting me. I choose to accept a lower GPA but learning just as much in exchange for a great deal more free time then doing pointless work. Oddly enough when I got to college they didn't care about the work and what I had been doing all along was shown to be the best solution. though this takes a personality that can deal with being told you are wrong and shrugging it off.

This is the inflexibility of our education system. I was in the same boat. The curriculum and grading scheme are designed to help those that need a lot of practice to understand the material, but involves moving so slowly that shaper minds get bored. People like you need a faster paced class that let you move onto the next subject once you've mastered the current one.

When I got to college properly documenting your lab notes, citing research, etc. all became much more important. Because you weren't really doing it to prove to the teacher you knew the material, you were doing it as training to get ready to present your ideas and results coherently to other people.

Imagine conducting a study on anything and leaving out how you came about the results. It could be better than nothing, but wouldn't be very helpful to everyone else.

For the record, I also got marked off for not showing my work in grade school.

Yes but imagine presenting your results and in the process explaining the basics of the earth orbiting the sun as part of your theory about planets in other galaxies. you explain the process that is new and what is needed for that topic but in the process you do not talk down to a group of your peers.

Like in college prep classes how they wanted me to show the steps done for adding numbers together.. At the highschool level I did not have a need to walk through the process that 1+1+2+1= 2+2+1=4+1=5 In my head I could easily see that that was start at 2 and count up 3 numbers (+1 is the same as just counting) getting to 5 it doesn't take 3 steps to get there but I would be wrong in sorting out something more complicated like ((1+1+2+1)^5)/10 unless I showed those three steps for addition. To me if you can do the math in your head you don't need to write it out, if you need the calculator to do it sure go for writing it down clarifies you know the steps not just letting the computer do it for you but mental math is a skill we were shown so we didn't need to do the extra work on paper. The only reason to require everything written out is if the teacher can't keep track of what skill level each student is at to know if they are just cheating with the calculator, or if it is the start of the class and they haven't had time to learn the students yet. Yes I expect more from a teacher then to treat everyone as the lowest denominator.

If you are presenting something you need a good way to present it but you also should not waste their time on the basics or talk down to them by doing so. Always present according to your audience and in math class that was the teacher (knows the topic better then me) and myself so the only reason to explain basics to the teacher is if I think they are behind me in ability and need it explained to them and I wasn't that egotistical back then.

Growing up as a 'smart kid,' according to my peers, I loved showing work because all the paint-huffers simply could not copy mathematical calculations as rapidly as individual answers. Nothing is more satisfying than turning the worksheet face-down first. Academics was not the challenge. The challenge was writing numbers or letters faster than all the numb-skulls.
