There's a book called Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon by Dave McGowan that goes into this kind of stuff. Many of the rock stars of the 60's had intelligence and/or military connections. When you consider that MKULTRA was going full steam at that time, it seems entirely possible that many of those bands were psychological operations.
And the admiral in charge of the Gulf of Tonkin was Admiral Morrison, who had a son that was in a band.
This comes from Inside The LC: The Strange but Mostly True Story of Laurel Canyon and the Birth of the Hippie Generation, which can be found here, and should be read by all.
The author is Dave McGowan, who recently died November before last of (shit you not) undetected late stage lung cancer at the age of 44. His site was down for months, but his daughters are running things now. The guy was a legendary conspiracy researcher, being the first to unravel the Boston Marathon Hoax and having done the most complete investigation into Lincoln's assassination (which he stated was the hardest investigation he has done thus far because of the time has passed). IIRC, he died before completing it.
We weren't good friends by any means, but I'd worked with him on some of my own projects before. There really is nobody left.

'in a band' @ The Doors.
They were major icons in the anti-war protest movement. But people did not know this tidbit at the time!
