Don't forget Japan and Turkey.

The 1st/2nd/3rd world isn't about race or ethnicity. Nor is it about wealth vs. poverty.

Originally it was a term to describe the relations in the early cold war. (Think 1950's.)

You had:

  • US and allies (1st world.)
  • USSR and allies (2nd world.)
  • Everyone else (3rd world.)

We are talking 'spheres of influence' and how (for example) a Russian satellite state in eastern Europe might as well be a 'whole world away' compared to the UK.

Only later did the term '3rd world' come to a pejorative term used to reference poor / under developed nations.

Nah some of southern Africa was 1st world I'm sure some parts still are but they losing ground fast. At least that's my understanding. I'm sure there are places in eastern Europe and Russia
