Don't forget Japan and Turkey.

The 1st/2nd/3rd world isn't about race or ethnicity. Nor is it about wealth vs. poverty.

Originally it was a term to describe the relations in the early cold war. (Think 1950's.)

You had:

  • US and allies (1st world.)
  • USSR and allies (2nd world.)
  • Everyone else (3rd world.)

We are talking 'spheres of influence' and how (for example) a Russian satellite state in eastern Europe might as well be a 'whole world away' compared to the UK.

Only later did the term '3rd world' come to a pejorative term used to reference poor / under developed nations.
