I thought they were doing it for some security reason or link problems or wanting people to google it so google knows people are looking for alternatives.

Because you don't need the www. Most browsers, if not all, can handle getting to a website without the www part.

FYI it's not a browser thing. Www is literally a subdomain of the website, same as any other. It was the standard mainly just to make it clear to people that anything starting "www" is one of these newfangled internet website things.

Because we now recognise anything in the format xxx.xx as a url, we're long past needing www at the start of everything. Webmasters usually just redirect any browser arriving at the www subdomain to the root so people can use either address.
