Tomorrow, two's complement.
The trick is to think of it like normal binary, merely with the weight of the highest bit negated, e.g. for a byte -128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1 are the weights. So -1 is -128 + the rest of the bits (which total 127).
