Silver has more practical uses and will be more rare if not already beyond golds rarity due to the demand from the electrical industry. (finding actual and accurate numbers on gold and silver is pretty tough). I think using gold is about the best it can get, as it is rare enough to hold a market stable and sturdy enough to not need to replace it every x years. Gold also has no real uses besides some random applications here and there.
