I came over during the FPH exodus and I remember being nothing but grateful to have a place that would have us. If there's anyone who was a regular user here before that, I'd love to hear your perspective on how that one differed from any of the other ones (pizzagate, European, this most recent shit-show) if in any ways. It took me over a year on this website to get over 100cp and I never once complained. I understood why the rule would be implemented; you can't just have some random person or 15 come in and fuck up the entire site for every other user. If shit needs to be downvoated, it will be downvoated for the appropriate reasons by contributing users who have shown they are not here to reek havoc on this here wonderful community. That's what I see a lot of them complaining about when I click those meanwhileontheothersite links. They're mad they have to contribute anything to the site before they can really start manipulating shit in the worse way....censorship. We technically have a form of censorship with how we use our voats, but they are ours and not the moderators. We have the power in that situation with deciding what is not worth other peoples' time. Sure, the content is still there to find, but it gets hidden under the better content. They're mad they don't get to decide for us, the user of this website, what is not worth our time. That's inexcusable and good riddance to the ones who have left.
Then I see others who are calling us all of the -ists, the very thing these people hated being called enough to vote D-D-D-DJ20 into office. I saw one of them write that we couldn't go more than 4 words without using nigger. That is a really off base generalization of all of us. While I don't really every say nigger on this site, I completely understand why some of our more eloquent goats use the initiation tactic on people. There is a lot of great conversations happening here and some of it is quite a bit surly to the general population unfamiliar with Voat. If those people come here and are engaging in conversations, becoming invested in our home here and then stumble on something they would find offensive, the first thing a lot of these people are conditioned to do is try and shut it down. In an age where all your feelings are supposed to be good feelings, how could anything make sense when 'nigger, kike, faggot, camel jockey, moonkcricket, sandnigger, chink, zipperhead, prairie nigger, and porchmonkey' get used?
"I guess that person just needs to be removed because words I don't like are being used and that's making the community bad"
Well, fuck you. Let's weed you out like so many other groups weed people out. Especially if it's for something important like our speech. I'd much rather downvoat someone than have them removed. If they're not breaking guidelines, I see no reason to remove them. If they want to remove people for using 'naughty' words on their board on their site, go for it, but we don't do that shit here. I think most of us look at the sentences people use, not the individual words. I also almost never see any slurs being used outside of the boards you would expect to see them. Of course, you're going to see nigger being used everywhere on v/niggers and probably littered throughout identitarian as well. Shock surprise, who would have thought. I wonder if anything someone says on v/gasthekikes might offend their Isreali-defending eyes. Find me one time it gets used in gaming,.
I actually have to stop myself here. I was going to add v/books to my list but went over there first to see what activity was like and the second post currently is by someone named gaskikeshangniggers, so that's going to hurt my example a bit, but he was just talking about books and I think my point gets across. We are a civil people here for the most part and we know that by not getting caught up in words, we can get through the horseshit and get to the real discussion. I think we in fact know we are all having real discussions when we're not deleted or banned for using the wrong words. Whether you want to say "More than 40% of adult African-Americans in Detroit are illiterate" or "More than 40% of adult niggers in Detroit are illiterate" does not change what you are saying. If I was talking with someone on this site about literacy and they say the niggers one, no amount of me getting upset makes it so that suddenly now they can read or that the person I'm talking to is wrong. I can either engage in the conversation or scream it since the wrong word was used. I'm glad that most of the screamers went back to their site to scream some more. They were doing an awful lot of here.
To any new goats who decided to stick around: I'm hopeful that you'll help foster this place in the way that it's intended. Our site is not perfect, but I don't think I would want it to be. I'm no TheodoreKent or i-am-me (two of the heavy-hitter posters I can think of off the top of my head), but I do what I humbly can to just enjoy the site and make it the fun place that I find it to be. It's not as busy or as happening as a place as the other site, but we work with what we have. Welcome aboard our Voat boat for goats.
