Isn't Kim broke atm because the US is holding is funds?

@puttitout I will say this over and over until you ack me - Peter Thiel is a billionaire VC who is a libetarian. He donated to Trump, much to the Valley's ire, and he regularly funds capable founders whose ideas further libertarian ideals, like free speech. Give him a ring.

I want a hardcore coders/IT specialists sub dedicated to solving this. My hunch would be that a port could be done cheaply and quickly just with volunteer goat skills and a bit of smart project management.

Be careful of hackers infiltrating this way! Wolves in sheep clothing!

Yup - but I hope open source principles would mitigate that

Experienced developer here, I'm in with both feet for any serious effort to port Voat to an open source stack.

I am more of a help desk support with server administration experience. I would love to help anyway I can. Once the backend is re-coded maybe I could help managing the servers.

I'm a computer engineering student, and only have a few semesters of CS. Java, python, and C primarily. Not the best help, but I'm willing to put in a few hours a day.

Same. I would love to learn all I can from the beautiful autists of Voat as well.

We'd both be able to learn tons and help the community.

A quick and easy first solution may be forcing commentators to post a minimum of X characters. No more one liners that actually triggers many small requests. Bigger comments forces users to read longer, and think longer to read/refresh/post a comment.

It reduces bandwidth used but keeps the quality of the posts.

Interesting idea, and would probably save bandwidth like you say, but it sounds like we're at crisis point and need a major shakeup anyway.

so much for free speech

The bandwidth savings would be negligible, and that's probably overstating it. Practically nothing.

Plus it discourages posting, appearing as reduced activity and engaged users, which will do a lot more harm to advertising revenue than the cost of a single database entry and a few hundred bytes per little post.

Is there a way to split Voat to different smaller and cheaper servers in the first step to reduce bandwidth? It does not matter if Voat is slow of parts does not work, as long as we keep it up and running to buy more time.

We don't need reliability at this moment, just enough time.

I don't know. IMO the problem is that is Microsoft .NET, hence the dependence on pricey Azure. I'd like to see a port to a different platform such as Linux as proposed by @Nihilist in the linked thread.

TBH I'm astounded that of all sites this one is running under MS systems. How did this happen in the first place?

Azure is not required for .Net hosting.

wait, what? .net is fucking terrible why would you choose to program something modern in something like that?

edit: how hard would it be to migrate voat to a different engine? im a dev but don't know much about maintaining/ distribution of servers

My repost from another thread. I am a programmer but have not delved into web/internet systems stuff much.

There has to be a smarter way to run this type of forum than the way it's being done, it shouldn't have to be so expensive. Can we get a more detailed breakdown of what the costs are, and work towards decreasing it to almost nothing? Even if we have to invent some new tech, it seems important to reduce the costs of these types of places, even beyond voat, I think you'll find a lot of programmers from reddit and such that would be willing to contribute towards a solution.

I don't think the solution will ever be turning small communities into money machines. I think that's just asking for trouble. I think the solution we need is a cheaper way to run large internet communities.

I'll help if I can. I'm a linux admin but I don't know much about .NET.
