I mean its essentially a small local company.

Its not like I am blindly shilling for CNN or anything. Thank you for your comment.

That's about intern-tier at a corporation, which seems reasonable for a college student needing some experience. I had a gig like that for a few months and it was great.

Is the job near Portlandia perhaps?

I don't want to give specifics, but yes it is in the Portland Area. It is within i'd say a 40 minute drive from Portland. So, it's not IN Portland, but near, yes.

Uh oh, I tried to make a joke and it failed, not the first time its happened and by the beard of Zeus it won't be the last.

Sorry, I was making a dumb reference to the show Portlandia.

But in all seriousness, what you're doing is solid, networking is key in the IT field. Good luck with your new assignment :)

Look, maybe you're really trying to help someone get into your old job. But... this sounds kinda like the advert that would be featured on Unsolved Mysteries and started a string of missing persons reports. Why would you want to give someone you have no idea who they are or their history to your old boss if you thought they were a decent place to work? just... mm. I don't know.

He could also just be letting people know about a job and tell them where to apply with out backing them. I have done that for people that have asked me in the past, if I knew about something let them know the job is out there but tell them you do not wish to be listed as a reference then if called you can let them know you said not to list you gives them a black mark instead of a plus while if they listen they simply have somewhere to drop a resume and a potential job that they have to earn on their own merit like any other they would apply for.

The PM side is I would expect camamoow doesn't want to give out his exact location or the company name to the internet public.

This is exactly correct.

Are you saying that they know every applicant just because they're in the same city?

This is no different than a newspaper ad.

No. Not at all. I'm... not sure how you got that.

This is no different than a newspaper ad.

You're right. Which is where I got the Unsolved Mysteries reference. OP says the employee asked if OP 'knew anyone who could replace me.' Usually that implies someone they KNOW who could replace them. OP's employer could put out an ad, I imagine they were looking for more of a character/skill reference that OP knows, not 'OP, could you please do the leg work for a new applicant to replace you so we don't need to screen them?' I understand what OP was attempting to do, but I don't think this is what their employer was asking for and it's... odd.

I am not vouching for anyone, I am just simply leaving my position I'd forward any contacts I got to him not as recommendations just simply letting people know there is a job that needs to be filled... geesh

My employer asked me if I knew anyone who could replace me.

So say no, because you don't know any people?

Usually when an employer asks if you know someone for something, they're asking if you KNOW someone to help them weed through people who have to apply. They anticipate the person you recommend will have the same temperament/knowledge/skill set/etc. and you might have knowledge about them and would know not to recommend child molesters or meth heads.

You did not suggest that your boss asked you to set up an online ad, screen the people, then send them along; you intimated they were looking for your personal recommendation.

Yeah, $20 an hour for a programmer in the Portland area is ridiculous. You can't afford to live on that there.
