Coming from webboards, digg, reddit, etc, I can say from personal experience that Voat is the least hive-minded community I've found so far (aside from professional ones).

I've had better diverse topic discourse here than anywhere else on the web at anytime except pre-2009 Reddit, OP is right, we are lucky.

Sane people don't consider downvotes abuse, they just laugh at the petty individuals who downvoted a viewpoint, although if you're talking facts and get it wrong and someone can prove it, well the downvote is there for a reason.

As an e.g. the same users will post and comment on Trump, even though they are ardent supporters, call him out on policy promises unmet. This did not happen during the last administration, it was just crickets from DNC voters. The range of viewpoints on Voat of Trump compared to Reddit on Trump is a great example of how diverse the community is here.

Agreed, I'm not saying voat is already shit, I'm saying it's going in that direction. Even you have to agree that this isn't the same voat we had 1-2 years ago. Granted, everything changes, but even though there are more people here now it still feels like the diversity of topics discussed is shrinking. Voat is still among the best platforms out three, maybe even the best, but I'll be more surprised than not when voat submits to the devils whip.

True, but that Voat was a heavy influx at once due to the Pao saga, leading to a huge creation of diverse subs. Some of these subs are now seeing a revival, due to organic growth.

Over the last few months, politics, political humour, technology and conspiracy investigation, have dominated I agree, however people want to talk about what they are most passionate about and at the moment that seems what's popular. One day the Goat will be sacrificed, but hopefully not soon.
