When I first started using Swype on smartphone, it was the greatest thing ever. Fast, easy, predictive. Later on, it seemed to be less and less predictive, and I'd have to correct a lot of things manually. Here's where it gets weird. Lately it seems to deliberately change words that might have controversial undertones, and generally dumbs down what I try to type in.
It's ever so subtly trying to control my vocabulary.
Taking my words and twisting them. Sometimes even correcting after I've finished typing.

100% agree. I was an early adopter of it and it sucks beyond belief now. I wish I could have the Windows Phone keyboard on my Android. That keyboard was so accurate there was rarely a mistake. Microsoft needs to port it over to other phones to spare us from the abomination that Swype has become.

I just use the stock keyboard and type with my thumbs.

I haven't ever used Swype seriously. I had SwiftKey and switched to GBoard. I just liked the features and integration more. However, I am more than comfortable recommending both GBoard and SwiftKey.

Swype was never a personal favorite of mine. I personally use GBoard on both Android and iOS. Chroma (Android) is good too.
