Yep not many wanted to fight a chemical war. I think the main reason we did was Israel. They were going to be next and if they were attacked with chemical weapons they would have nuked Iraq, and if we kept to JFk's promise of mutually assured destruction It could have caused WW3. So we sit back and let the choice be taken out of our hands or we do something.
I agree Israel was a huge motivating factor, and even the lies I am citing are connected to Israel. One of the people that orchestrated the incubator lie was Senator Tom Lantos, a holocaust survivor. Tom was an American Zionist. He was one of the few people present who knew the true identity of the girl who testified.
I can't say for certain things would have been better if we stayed uninvolved. I think I am of the mindset that there were no "right" options. I will say that I don't like people using lies to agitate for war.
Our past in the middle east is certainly more sordid than just this affair, but patterns seem to repeat themselves.
