You can say whatever you want without being arrested. Nobody has to listen, you may be treated differently because of what you said. You may be arrested for the implications of what you said, though. If you yell 'BOMB!' in an airport, they don't detain you for saying 'bomb', they detain you because of the implication you might have one.

Freedom of Speech declares you can say whatever you want, but this in turn does not warrant a Freedom from Consequence.
You can call someone a jackass, accuse him of pedophilia, but don't be surprised when they hit back, legally, physically or metaphorically.

The ability for a group of people (society) to outwardly state their feelings. If some asshole wants to run his mouth about dumb shit; at least him having said that allows me to have a conversation with him about why I believe he's wrong.

If his stupid views are censored, he harbors those thoughts unchallenged for the rest of his life.

To me, free speech is a mechanism for the transmission, processing and filtering of thought.
