Something I long ago realized:

The Net is like the Wild West.

First, there are pioneers who go looking for new, valuable stuff. Most die.

Sometimes, they find something- there's a Gold Rush. Sometimes it craps out, and you get a ghost town... sometimes it grows into a village, then a town, then a city.

If it's a big success, the government, the law, churches, women and children move in... and they don't care much for the hairy, smelly pioneers who started the place.

Time to move on for the pioneers and adventurers.

The WELL, Usenet, kuro5shin, Slashdot, suck.com... all ghost towns.

Reddit was once the frontier of cyber-civilization- success changed it into a mall with a PG-rated cineplex.

Now is Voat's time... enjoy it, cause it won't last forever.

I savor every second of it. Voat is what I always wanted Reddit to be when I first used the site some years ago.

Yeah, I was on Reddit for 7+ years, and the last few were agony.

Really reinforced my belief that success is poison.

The WELL

Damn, son.

This is what I hope for in Voat. We have the kind of content that the 'government' in your analogy doesn't like that much. It's weird and everything-ist to outsiders. My hope is that we never enter the 'big' phase. More users, maybe, but just enough to get atko and puttputt the income they deserve, not a monolith, retain that small community feel.

I give it 2-3 years, max.

Economics, government crackdown, wild success... something's gonna kill everything good about Voat.

Don't get attached.

I think that this is tied into a simple numbers game. Once something gains too many people, it gains too much attention by both the right, and the wrong, sorts of people. And so, the usual chaos of too many people on this earth comes to bear once again.

Nice analogy. I've always considered it the frontier but had never thought about it in more depth than being an unexplored entity

Whenever I read the comment section, I read [...] even the thirty replies back and forth between antiracist and his victims (just kidding thats a waste of time).

Haha, but that shit is fucking hilarious sometimes.

It's one of those things that makes voat it's own thing, you know?

I'd love it if someone made a bot that made a huge library of comments by antiracist then replied a random one to very new users. As sort of a hazing ritual where they sit there confused and have to try to figure out what the hell someone is trying to tell them.

I even take time to argue with Amalek... he's a real tool.

you're hardly a true user of voat if you haven't run into amalek off his meds you get to be a true veteran of the site when you can appraise whether or not someone making the claim is the real amalek

  1. Go with the flow
  2. Don't down vote unless you really really mean it
  3. If you disagree with someone's comment, first recognize that in his reality you look just as crazy so take a deep breath and count to ten before replying
  4. Post easy quality conservative topics like pro-gun rights or free speech to get a feel for things
  5. Allow your CCP to accumulate to safe levels
  6. Occasionally post something that will earn you negative CCP, like: I hate Donald Trump because I had a bad experience with Firefox once and
  7. Leave it up as a badge of honor

Until you've posted something that earns negative points, you're not a real man regardless of whether or not you have a doctor's note.

This is actually super useful for voat newcomers, coming from a big community can really make you feel like this place is dead when in actuality it is thriving, much more than the likes of ribbit. It's not a super easy transition but it's much more engaging, and you actually get a chance to be more than just another fucking trend-following asshat. Additionally you get to actually make friends here, ones that you probably wouldn't on other, bigger sites. Case in point, @i-am-me is incredibly strange by voat standards and there are plenty of people that vocally dislike her, but she's also super nice and generally just fun to talk to. What've you got to say about this, i-am-me?

browse /v/all/new if you wanna scratch that itch, at the back of your head, that makes you wonder whether it's turning in to a ghost-town or not. That's a rapid-fire shitstorm of mixed bags.

Thank you for the mention, dyna, my good K9rade (: I like you and enjoy your banter, too!
I agree. It's awfully easy to get close and know one another personally. It's actually kind of sad because there are so many lovely, interesting folks. I'd rather hang out with you folks IRL, but we are limited to this forum /: ...

and there are plenty of people that vocally dislike her

Oof /: I can think of 3-4 people who dislike me, but I don't think they've been too vocal. Who expressed vocal dislike?

Honestly I've only seen it once or twice, so maybe I'm looking too much into it. But it's always been the "no girls on the internet" people.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of good reading in many of the collapsed top level threads. When a comment reaches a -4, it is automatically collapsed even though there may be many good and up voted comments below. I have always expanded the threads to read through to then end.

I too would prefer it if the comments were not collapsed. Saves the clicking. People's replies to the most downvoated comment tend to be pretty great.

It would be nice if that was an option in the settings, or a <expand-all> button somewhere.

I agree. My account is young but I came over with the Reddit migration after Victoria was canned. I loved Victoria. I remember reading Snoop Dogs AMA and feeling like he was on TV having people ask him questions and him answering. She did amazing work and I really feel like they should publish some of her AMAs book style.

I love voat. Im sad a bunch of people have left. If you look at Top ever we used to have something like 2000 upvoats on a single thread. I wish more people would feel free upvoating and hope more people view /v/all/new often to see what you want. I block subverses, I dont lie. I am impressionable.

Voat is the opposite of real life for me. I work with a bunch of Democrats. I state I voted for Jill Stein. They still remind me that it was a vote for Trump and hiss at the word of him. Im trying to hear him out, while they are bashing those saying "Give Him A Chance".

I work with a few immigrants and I adore them. I would like to help them be an American too if they wanted. But theyre all doing it the right way and are doing it through the government. I think they deserve priority over those over here illegally.

Im sorry I am ranting, I guess this post struck something. Thanks for reading.
