He made civilian vehicles and the US government commissioned him to produce for the war effort. His intention was never to work for the government, though they did pay him for manufacturing during WW2. He is not a profiteer in the sense that the Rothschilds or the international cabal of bankers and arms dealers were war profiteers. I think you're being a little disingenuous with your interpretation of being a war profiteer.

He sold engines to the Germans as I understand it.. Was playing both sides.

There was a demand for his products and he sold them. He and Adolf Hitler actually had a friendship. As did Walt Disney and many other prominent American businessmen.
His engines and the manufacturing skills of Ford Motor Company was the envy of the entire world. Do you also call Edison a war profiteer because Germans and Americans both used light bulbs?
