Unless you're buying a custom AKM from Krebs or Rifle Dynamics, there's no reason to spend more that $1000 on a Kalashnikov. Or an Ar-15 for that matter... A Colt 6920 Law Enforcement model M4 is only like $1200, and that's MSRP; you could get one for close to a grand if you shop around.
