Ah, ok. Yeah I misunderstood your point. There've been a couple times where I was downvoted for similar reasons and usually I just shrug it off and don't sweat it because I can take the hit. If I figure there's room to make my case a bit better I might reply and get downvoted again but I'm not that worried about my modest collection of internet points. At least, so long as I'm not the target of a witchhunt where I essentially get nuked into oblivion and can't vote and post like a normal person.

I know I shouldn't speak in generalities and blah blah but it seems like it is a thing with the left where they don't like to be around people with conflicting ideas. That's why they're so obsessed with safe spaces. Then here on voat a lot of times people will just get discouraged from a downvote and the plethora of pro-Trump and racist posts and I kind of get how the sheer volume of that stuff makes it seem kind of daunting. And even I just kind kind of filter it out anymore but in the back of my head I feel like if people aren't actively engaging those people in debate and calling them out, taking the downvotes, it's just going to get worse here and more one-sided.

That's one of the things I've been talking about on here recently but everyone poopoos it. We have a real problem where a dedicated group of alt-right people are essentially squashing content that they don't agree with, even in subs that have nothing to do with them like /v/progressive. I'm fairly liberal but don't subscribe to either political party, so I couldn't care less about actual progressive view points, but when people go out of their way to downvoat instead of ignoring content they don't like, then we've got reddit-like issues.

but in the back of my head I feel like if people aren't actively engaging those people in debate and calling them out, taking the downvotes, it's just going to get worse here and more one-sided.

We're already there. A lot of good content creators have moved on because they're sick of every other post being full of inaccuracies and fallacies and, when you point it out, just getting reamed to the point you can't post anymore.

I can't wait for this election cycle to be over.
