The phrase doesn't mean go out and start a diet to lose weight. It means that if you chug a 2 liter of soda at each meal and drown your food in ranch, no amount of exercise is going to make you skinny.

Exercise doesn't make you thin in the first place. Why this is pushed I have no idea.

Not directly, for sure. But people who are physically active generally aren't obeasts. Of course, they do a bit more than 30 minutes of physical activity.
