This is such a hot button issue for me. I could melt your ear bitching about AncestryDNA and the former glory that was Ancestry.com.

Ancestry.com used to be a useful resource for researching historical, genealogical documentation. In the last 5 years or so, they have abandoned their focus on document gathering and indexing and shifted entirely to DNA and health profiling. Their spokesmoron has even recently said they no longer want to be known as an ancestry-research company, but instead they want to be known as an "identity company". Despite retaining the name "Ancestry" this company has NOTHING to do with dead people anymore. They realize that they can earn far, far more for their investors by monetizing living people, and the more they know about those living people (oh, such as their DNA profile) they more money they can make. Fuck them.

It's my impression that Voaters tend to be less gullible with their personal information than the countless retirees that seem to be AncestryDNA customers. But just in case you were thinking about ordering one of these bullshit DNA tests, read this: 23andMe, Ancestry and Selling Your DNA Information and definitely read this: New Orleans filmmaker cleared in cold-case murder; false positive highlights limitations of familial DNA searching

Thank you for allowing me this rant opportunity.

Oh I am aware. You, I assume, also know about their unending FOIA requests and their somewhat successful copywrite protections they put on the data gained through FOIA?

Paywalls for all!

Yep - things like this, Ancestry.com Files Bogus DMCA Notice to Keep Public Domain Records Offline right?

I tried to search to see if there were any updates to the Black Vault situation, but couldn't find any, but I do see that Black Vault still has their Project Bluebook database still up, so hopefully they won that round.

Any of that "know your ancestor, blah blah blah" is hogwash. Keep your DNA to yourself.

Oh my gripe isn't with the usefullness of DNA testing. It is with the copywrite BS Ancestry has pulled, and the security risk of creating a DNA database.

And in the ad the SJW crap.

I totally get how handy DNA testing can be if done by trustworthy organizations.

Also, since you are from OK, I just want to say that you have a beautiful state. Seriously underrated landscape wise.

And the people - I have no sense of self, identity or worth and didn't feel complete until I could glom into an ancestor's. Only now am ia complete person.

That makes me sad. I get being interested in the past - that's okay, but jeez they make it sound awful when they say it.

What kind of person redecorates because they're 0.003% something?

It was embedded. :( It is the one with a panel from Ancestry sitting at a table with people they are "challenging" about...things. In an auditorium with people watching.
