It only went on as long as it did because getting a referendum was very difficult. It took Nigel Farage, leader of the UK Independence Party, 25 years of campaigning. David Cameron, leader of the Conservative Party and the current Prime Minister, only promised the referendum to stop massive defections of his voters and his MPs to UKIP. He gambled and lost but his hand was forced.
