that doesn't matter, just as long as they hand over any logs when asked, and don't host music or video copyrighted by someone jerk from hollywood then they are free to do what they want. They can host kiddy porn just as long as NSA can have access to their logs. And the fact that they let hollywood have shill accounts and give them free press they are untouchable.

Isn't thepiratebay successful because they can't get at the people that run the site (I don't actually know how thepiratebay does it). Unless Atko is going into hiding I am not sure we can really hide from any legal issues.

They got them actually. They went to prison for a while:

TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay Away From Keyboard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTOKXCEwo_8

That documentary/movie is quite interesting.

If I'm correct I'm pretty sure it's the laws of the country TPB founders are located in- Sweden. And the fact that TPB isn't actually hosting these torrents/files but just a search engine to them which isn't illegal. Yes people censor them, and cut their hosting, but since TPB is so small, they can get around that.

I don't think you could. Any idea what space VOAT takes now? In a year it will be considerably more, but it is helped that VOAT doesn't actually host the images. That being said in a recent announcement @Atko wanted an integrated Image host which of course would significantly raise the size of the site.

What I don't understand is, if they keep hoping how do they always seem to find local single moms who need my attention!

Probably Switzerland is the best choice. Civil law, recoverable attorney fees, constitutional protection of free speech with very limited exceptions for criminal law, libel laws that acknowledge good faith as defense, strict requirements for obtaining data.

Prq used to be run by one of the TPB founders. Also hosts 4chan

Oh my... Web hosting is 130 BTC/month!?!? I'm happier not even looking dedicated servers... How much does 4chan earn??

Not sure if 4chan is hosted at prq at the moment.

And they have incredible failsaves and an incredible location.

There's actually a part in the TPB AFK documentary that shows the servers...

sea haven might be an option if it's around, but that is way way more expensive.

voat, should subdivide subversives via sub domains and not folder names, that way each subverse can be hosted any were in the world. Image asking for the logs on that, sure but the site is spread across 27 countries and territories, do you have a warrant and an international extradition order for all servers.. no? no worries come back in 10 years when you have them all

For freedom of speech concerns, I think I would focus more on redundancy and being able to quickly get back up and running if anything happens.

Part of that would be developing multiple presences on different services/hosts and/or maintaining an email list. If the website goes down, I'd be able to get messages out via social media and email. Make sure there are multiple "official" channels.

As a case study, look at the FPH community. It lived pretty exclusively on Reddit, and even mostly within one subreddit. When that subreddit and the moderators' Reddit accounts were closed, there was a definite floundering period because they didn't have a backup plan in place. fph.io didn't really work out. They've mostly landed at Voat, but you can treat it as an on-going case study to see if the community is truly able to rebuild to previous numbers.
