The escapement and balance wheel with hairspring are the heart of a mechanical watch. It is the regular winding and unwinding of the hairspring, controlled by the escapement wheel with pallet fork that allows a watch to keep time. The movement is so precise that high end mechanical watches only gain or lose a couple seconds a day. These simulations give you an idea of how some different types of escapements function. Note that the coaxial escapement is one of the most recent innovations in escapements, with the swiss lever being by far the most commonly used escapement.
