How to Spend Platinum Properly: A Buyers Guide
So you have some platinum from either buying it from DE or you traded some stuff with a player and they paid in platinum. But what do you do with it? What is the smartest thing to buy? Will you be wasting it by using it on this item?
Well here's some tips on how to spend your platinum wisely so that you get the most bang for your buck and feel like each purchase was a good decision.
Never buy resources, buy boosters!
This is a pretty important rule, the way DE has set up the market resources are very expensive for what they give you. Instead if you find yourself in need of some resources and you have some platinum you should buy the two resource boosters in the boosters part of the store and then run a few missions. One of the boosters increases the chances of resources spawning while the other booster doubles the amount you get from each pickup, including rare resources.
The boosters come in three or seven day versions which allow you to adjust your costs based on how much you'll be able to play, three day boosters are good for weekends while seven day boosters are good for holiday breaks. As an indication I often farm orokin cells at the Draco map node, without a Nekros increasing drop-rates I frequently get 6-14 orokin cells for four waves with both boosters turned on.
You'll find your options restricted if you don't have a good number of warframe and weapon slots, I'd advise having enough to store your favourite weapons and frames and then a few more for mastery farming.
I myself keep all the prime frames and prime weapons in my inventory and then some of the more difficult to get warframes like Mesa, Hyrdroid and Mirage just because reacquiring them would be a chore. As for weapons I store all the primes and some of the part based weapons like Detron and Brakk, along with some of my favourite gear for PvP like the Jat Kittag and Secura Penta. Remember that event weapons should be stored in here as well as they are one time things for now, but they do come with their own slots so it's not usually an issue.
Cosmetics and Colors!
I'd advise picking up boosters and slots before you start picking up cosmetics and the previous options give you more gameplay effects that can help you get more prime parts which can help you get more platinum thus giving you more of a positive feedback-loop.
But if you have what you need then it's time to start thinking about luxuries, I'd start out with colors as they are the most usable, I'd advise the smoke color scheme as it contains the pure black and pure white colors which can be useful in PvP and some warframes to limit flashy effects that can interfere with visuals or over-blow them to maximum flashiness to throw off the enemy. Other color packs with good choices are the storm pack, infested pack and tenno pack as these give good options and a mix of understated and overt colors.
As for cosmetics I'd advise trying to get one of the syndicate syndanas to start with as they give you an insight into how they look and move although some syndanas use bones and some cloth so it's a little more complicated. Other than that buy armor in packs as opposed to individual parts and bare in mind that some frames have inbuilt armor parts already like banshee and frost prime.
Potatoes and Forma!
I'd avoid buying orokin catalysts and orokin reactors as they are often given in weekly alerts and other events or invasions. You'll find that unless you're looking to put a potato into every weapon or frame you'll find yourself with a backlog of them. I myself only ran low on my stockpile after a year or so of play because I made it a goal of mine to collect all the prime weapons and frame and then set them up with potatoes and forma.
Speaking of which forma is another thing you'll want to avoid buying as you'll find your inventory filled with blueprints for the things if you spend some time in void mission, DE have very recently at the time of this post made some adjustments to drop rates for them so take this advice with a small grain of salt but you should still avoid buying them if you can. Again I only ran low on the things when I built a ton of clan weapons in bulk.
This is a little off topic as we aren't talking about platinum here but pretty much all the time apart from when it's the short period between two offer there will be a prime access offer available. These are there to promote the new prime warframe and some shiny prime kit to go with them. Sometimes the prime kit is cosmetic and sometimes it's functional, but there's usually at least a primary and a secondary weapon in there.
There are four options to choose from with prime access, there's the three "buy the guns and the frame and the gear" options which are expensive and give you everything right now, and then there's the exclusive option if you just want the stuff you can't get hold of in the game through normal gameplay, which basically means just the cosmetic stuff. I'd advise going for this stuff personally, it helps DE keep going and it gets you some shiny parts to put on your prime frames and weapons. But only go for the exclusive packs, because it saves you a little money and gives you some more gameplay by making you go get the parts and putting the stuff together yourself, it might not be the best fun working and waiting for the RNG to favour you, but you'll appreciate the frame or what not a lot more than if it was just in your arsenal at the touch of the button.
Animations and Rushing!
I'd only advise avoiding buying animations personally, they cost a bit too much for what they are and you always have a choice of two anyway. It can be funny to give Rhino one of the more risqué female animations but it soon loses it's hilarity after a few missions when you realise it only happens when you're stationary for a little while and that never really happens in missions.
Rushing items in the foundry is another thing I'd advise against going for, some of the rush prices are really high and it's not like you'll miss out if you don't pay the fee, it'll get here when it gets here. But if you must rush items I'd advise only rushing frames as their three day construction time is very long and rushing price is somewhat worth it sometimes.
