I'd much rather binge-watch Vikings instead of trying to catch the broadcasts each week, so I have the first 3 seasons of Vikings and love the show.
However, it seems there are different releases of the seasons being issued in different countries, and most people don't know about it.
So some distributor in Canada has the rights to distribute Vikings there, and has produced the crappiest edition of a blu-ray I've ever seen!
Here are some of the problems it has:
- Lousy Dolby Digital sound
- Shortened episodes
- No extras. Nada. Zilch . . .
- It has no subtitles.
The US versions of the series has DTS sound. I've compared the sound of the Canadian release to DTS tracks of the US blu-rays, and it sounds like shit compared to the quality of the US version.
I was intrigued that the average time of the Canadian release's episodes were several minutes shorter than the average of MGM's US release. So I got on Canadian Amazon (amazon.ca) and looked at the reviews, and it seems like the Canadian one has broadcast episodes that were shortened to fit into the 1-hour broadcast time slot along with commercials. MGM's edition has so-called 'extended versions' that include all the footage.
This is true for all the seasons. Every seasons' blu-ray on the Canadian site has reviews pointing out how bad it is and telling the reader to order the US version from Amazon.com.
And no subtitles. WTF! Including subtitles is easy, since TV broadcasts include closed captions. This leaves hard-of-hearing people out in the cold.
The image quality of the videos on the Canadian one are OK, seem as good as the US version, but they've obviously cut corners every way they can in other ways.
Anyways, people are selling this Canadian edition on ebay, and if you don't know about this you can pick it up instead of the good edition (ask me how I know, LOL.)
It has a different cover, so you can recognize it that way.
Here's the cover of the Canadian edition:
This is the cover of MGM's US edition:
Poor Canadians, I presume because of distribution agreements the only version on sale in their stores is the crappy version. So if you live in Canada, you'll have to get on ebay and make sure to buy a US edition rather than buy it in the store.
Anyways, just wanted to give people a heads-up so others can learn from this experience and avoid getting ripped off. If you're buying these blu-rays on ebay, make absolutely certain you're getting MGM's US edition.
Also, I don't know what the European editions of the blu-rays are like. Maybe somebody from Europe could tell us?
