I'm going with lemongrass being the deal breaker. Everything else is pretty easy to find.
Garlic
Ginger
Shallots (or red onion)
Tumeric
Olive Oil
Chicken Stock
Blend it all up and make it a paste. Cook chicken thighs and cut up onions in it. Throw in some green beans. That's pretty much it.
The only rough patch is lemongrass. Oh and the rice he just sort of "magicked" in.

What fairy land do you live in where you can find shallots and tumeric?

The united states. The shallots are usually between the garlic and regular or red onions. Or in a pinch you can always find red onions. It's just a sweeter onion really.
And tumeric is in the dried spice section between Thyme and White Pepper. You just gotta know what you're looking for.
Oh, and if you want cheap bay leaves (different recipe, but a good deal) look in the spanish section. They have a bunch of really cheap spices...and coke with real sugar.
Edit: And if you really want to spend some time wondering WTF is that fruit? There's a full asian grocery down the road maybe 15-20 minutes. Welcome to the new world.

Thanks for writing the recipe out. I'm going to copy and paste that and send it to my girlfriend.
