I don't think we're too dumb to learn a second language, we're too lazy and entitled. It's kind of like the metric system. Why are we still not on the fucking metric system?

Actually the YouTube app was recently updated to play vertical videos full screen properly a few weeks ago. You just have to press the arrows button. Makes it much better.

Hey. How about everybody lighten up a little. Know what they call someone who speaks three languages? Trilingual. How about two languages? Bilingual. And only one language? That would be an American. In my late forties I needed a language to complete a college degree. Chinese was out of my depth. But I got through Spanish.

Spanish, Italian, and most European languages are Latin based, so you can muddle your way through. I have been watching Japanese anime for years, and I still haven't picked up anything that I could use practically. Recognizing a few words like death, kill, sword, etc. isn't going to help me in the real world. ;) I just have a lot of respect for Europeans who can master 3 or 4 languages. Here, if you use a Spanish word, it's almost as if it's an attack on your American freedoms.

My Spanish has faded in twenty or more years. But I got the sense when I'd say something in Spanish around co-workers that I was seen as part of the problem of immigrants taking good-paying jobs from hard-working Americans. I wish that I'd been exposed to several languages early. Say, pre-teen.

This is hilarious, but incredibly sad at the same time. I don't get why people need to get offended when they hear a freaking conversation that's not targeted towards them. It's just really arbitrary and asinine. People speak other freaking languages. Not everything revolves around America and the English language.

Plus, I think it's pretty important to learn Spanish, considering you could understand 1/2 of the Americas and Spain by learning to speak/write in Spanish.

I can get that people don't need to learn another language because they don't have any incentive to travel. We already have English dubs/subs for foreign films so there's not much need to learn a foreign language in America, as most young people already speak English, in addition to their native language. I just think learning Spanish could be beneficial, considering 1/2 of all of the Americas speaks it, and more cities are getting more Spanish speakers as a result of immigration, even though I only speak English.

Still, it's just incredibly stupid and asinine to be offended at someone because they speak another language.

Godwin's law IRL. I don't really understand the correlation between speaking Spanish and Nazis and communists overthrowing the US.

We're too dumb? Nah. We just don't have the same need to be bilingual or trilingual as other countries with multiple official languages. Like, there's no one secondary language that dwarfs all the others in terms of importance. Some will say Spanish, and sure, they have good reasons for it. Others will say Chinese, and they too could have good reasons. Heck, ever French could have some valid reasons. However, the US is huge (2.5 times larger than the EU), and English is the singular primary language across all of it. Members of the EU don't have that same luxury: in a much smaller space they face a much bigger variance of languages and cultures. As a dude from Washington state, yeah, I would have a lot more incentive to learn German if it was the primary language of Oregon and Nevada. But that's not the case, is it?

They speak English in England. You speak American while you're in America, damnit.

Don't learn English, don't get a job, fine by me. Would anyone be so fucking ignorant to go to a country like Japan or China and then just tell them to fuck off and learn whatever your native language is? Have some respect for the people taking you in. There is a reason pretty much anyone in Europe speaks English. America/Britain have had the most influence on the globe for the past 2-3 hundred years.

North America was discovered by an Italian sailor name Columbus whose voyages were commissioned by Spain. There's a reason why South Americans and Mexico speak Spanish. Saying one should learn the language is different from actually being able to do it. I've studied formally a few years of Spanish and French throughout junior high and high school, but I cannot have any coherent conversation today with any Spanish-speaking or French-speaking person. Maybe someone working 12 hours a day just doesn't have the time to learn a language too.

It wasn't discovered. There were people living there already. Their descendants are the mexicans today. Karma is a bitch.

Honestly I wouldn't just go to South America, without knowing how to expect any fucking Spanish, and then just expect the local population to accommodate me. Why don't you go to China without knowing any fucking Chinese and let me know how it works out? America isn't here to just give you everything for free and 0 effort, I don't know why people have this idea in their heads.

BTW are you seriously making fun of people in America who want to keep English as the primary language because "they're supposedly too dumb to learn a 2nd or 3rd language" yet you yourself admitting you're too stupid to learn french or spanish?
