Sure, but before Europe even got there, there was already massive amounts of poverty, slave rings and dictatorships.

People think Europeans invented the African slave trade, they didn't. There was already slave trades there, the Europeans just got the slaves already there. Then again you could argue that Africa would be much worse today if Europe didn't turn up, specifically Britain which ended the slave trade and liberated it from Nazi regime with America. I know lot's of the former colonies are now part of the Commonwealth which pushes these African nations to become democracies and increase human rights and Britain protects Somalian trade from pirates.

I think you may be missing the point though. The biggest reason why they're doing so poorly is largely because they were exploited for centuries, even to this day. They just straight get taken advantage of, Sudan was forced into growing cash crops like cotton for many years to pay back a debt. This forced the people to starve or buy grain and such at exorbitant prices. That's just one small example that was in the 90s I believe.

I'll give you a broader picture of current day issues though. The IMF and World Bank give out loans to other countries, but when they do this, they have quite a bit of power over that country. It buys them political, regional, and economical influence. These are the types of tools that are still used today to exploit poorer countries. Another way you know this is true, is that these organizations have been known to give more money to certain richer countries, like Israel, rather than the ones who really need it. Things may have changed, but really, they didn't.
