They being MGM, wanted to cash in the $15 Million insurance policy following the death of Natalie Woods, after principal photography was almost complete (and all of the scenes needing Woods were in the can). The insurer, Lloyds of London, refused to pay out, and gave Douglas Trumbull the money to complete the film. The experience drove Trumbull out of Hollywood, never to return. There is the tragedy.

So the answer is, as to virtually every question in Hollywood, money.
