Really I don't think the video is all that remarkable except for the fact that it went private in the past two days while spez is trying to historically revise the origin story of reddit:

Neither Alexis nor I created reddit to be a bastion of free speech, but rather as a place where open and honest discussion can happen

As far as I know, it seems that in this video he said Reddit was, direct quote, a "bastion of free speech." Now, several years later, in a Reddit post, he's said quote "Neither Alexis nor I created reddit to be a bastion of free speech." Obviously that quote is out of context, but suffice it to say he fucked up.

EDIT: I'm told he said this in a forbes article, NOT this video. Whoops

I feel like the fact that reddit wasnt their idea, but Bobs idea, is conflicting with other Interviews they did.

I wonder if one of the next press-manipulating moves will be for Alexis to reach out to UVa's alumni magazine and have them remove the glossy spread done on him and reddit a few months ago, in which he basically conflicts himself all over again.

How do you know so much about Reddit?

[–] go1dfish [S] 0 points 58 points (+58|-0) ago

My account was nearly 9 years old, I built the first removal detection bots on reddit.

Hell I'd go as far as to say I know the reddit API better than any current remaining admin. I've pulled some cool shit with it over the years.

Now I want nothing more to see the place burn brightly to the ground for turning on it's long held principles.

[–]reddbullish 1 point 5 minutes ago  Immediatley download and save the mirror. Also this statement is funny "Neither Alexis nor I created reddit to be a bastion of free speech, but rather as a place where open and honest discussion can happen: " Open discussion and free speech are the same thing. Also that guys seems like the corporate whore Steve Jobs while the dead Reddit founder was the Woz who was the really principled genius programmer. RIP. That guy really wanted reddit as a bastion of real activism and was pissed when he was outvoted and they sold Reddit to mainstream media giant Advanced Publications ie CondeNaste who of course immediately began subdividing the activists into subreddits and censoring content to prevent people power.

When he does his AMA we should all reply to his answers "Hi Ho, Hi Ho.. its off to Voat we go"

Most of the thread would probably look something like this.

Actually, I'm willing to bet that it will look like that regardless.

Fark Slashdot Digg Reddit Voat...

0

[–] Snort 0 points 24 points (+24|-0) ago

Long time Farker. There was a website change. The Mod/admin said "You'll get over it." rather than just listening and acknowledging that some people were upset. Combine with the growing footprint of Reddit it was a bad time to piss off people. Plus, the comment system on Fark does suck.

So now you have Admins on Reddit not acknowledging that people on Reddit are pissed and standing up and taking responsibility.

They may have start up and business knowledge but they have absolutely no people skills.

This is the name of the game with social media sites; They gain popularity, improve/expand, become mainstream, focus on monotization, disregard users (because hey, they are the top dog, they can do what they want), proceed to alienate users, and finally die as a new site rises to take its place.

It happens to every major site; Fark, Slashdot, Digg, Myspace, Facebook (facebook is on its way out, everyone is just waiting for a replacement to run to). Reddit is going throught it now, and eventually if Voat is successful it will fall as well.

You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become Myspace.

"Oh, they're just a bunch of horny, whiny twenty-somethings. They'll get over it. We're the easiest option."

Reddit may be a corporate whore who decided to fuck stupid, but we sure as hell didn't.

Oh, but they are acknowledging that people are upset that the mods don't have enough tools... /s

Usenet still rules

Fidonet or something similiar may reemerge if corporate bandwidth limits keep happening.

( for those who dont know. Fidonet and other things of that generation operated by everyone having there own reddit like bulletin board operation that communicated with other distributed bulletin boards and automatically updated each other over dial up phone lines which had no bandwidth usage limits in the usa.)

Really when people talk about having a dencentralized reddit it has already been done with the old bullentin board systems of the 90's. They just should run them over high speed internet lines now.

Come to think of it that is a really good idea.....

Usenet Slashdot Digg Reddit Voat

Slashdot made some bad slashvertisements, lost key staff, and did some crap UI changes. At least they generally let you option into the old UI. However, they recently changed the UI without allowing for user options. I finally quit them for good after nearly 20 years, UID < 3000. Eff them.

My same path. Don't know what thoughts I'd have in my head without my system admin friend showing me slashdot decades ago. And the rest is natural selection. Evolution.

Sigh...I skipped a couple of small sections, but that's 15 minutes of my life I'll never get back. And there wasn't a thing about free speech in there. Just talked about Reddit being a web aggregation that would based on your history suggest further content that fits your interests.

Good to know, I could only handle about 30 seconds of boredom before I came back here to see where the direct link to a relevant quote was. Meh. Reddit still sucks tho.

He's doing an AMA in two days, hope this gets to the top of the comments section. Reddit's 'corporatization' has been the most ham-handed debacle I've ever witnessed. It's as if The Three Stooges were in charge.
