Emotions aren't negotiable but our reactions to them when we have enough experience with dealing with them. An extremely young child for instance will go from 0-100 with blind rage when you tell them they can't have something like chocolate at the shops and will need to be beaten into submission with a hit on the hand or bum that gives them a more pressing issue to deal with. As they get older though they learn to deal with their desires and let them go instead of allowing them to control them like they did at such a young age.
The same is true of any emotion or state of being as we start off as blank slates and only through experiencing the extremes of all the different feelings can we know how to react to them. It's why we fell so hard for our first crushes while it takes a while to work up to the same level with later lovers, why after losing a loved one small things don't make you so upset, why we can handle suffering better after feeling extreme pain, why sheltered people overreact and become sjw's, etc. Obviously we still feel those emotions but we're better able to deal with them after we've experienced with a more extreme version of them.
