Well, if the estate sale didn't take any of your information or if you gave false info. And waited a year or two. Would be very difficult for them to track down.

That was my point though, they don't have to have taken your info. The police can poll the cell providers to find out who was connected to that tower around the time of the estate sale. Either that or if they happen to have a stingray device (IMSI catcher). So all you would have had to have done was be in that area around that time with your phone on and they would know you were there. Granted it would have to be something more serious for them to go to that effort, but don't be naive about what the police are capable of finding out given the right motivation.

Imagine being the police going through all that effort, only to find out the guy that got it from an estate sale sold it again at a garage sale. Or maybe he didn't and is in fact the guy they are looking for, but how would they know?
