Pathetic people look around, blink their eyes, and realize that everything they've done all their lives means nothing, that they've accomplished nothing, that they stand for nothing. So they go on a desperate quest for meaning, and find ... nothing. It's sad and it's common. As Henry David Thoreau once said, "The mass of men live lives of quiet desperation." At the end of life, what is there? A few meaningless memories that will die with you. A few things you've done that probably only you care about, and nobody else will remember. Dust in the wind. The Bible is correct, but we are usually too distracted by sights and sounds and "feels" to stop and realize it. We are flowers in the field. We bloom and wither, and we return to the earth, and whether we did something, or saw something, or accomplished something, matters not at all after our deaths to anybody or anything.
