I disagree slightly. You can't negotiate for respect. You only earn it.

Enslaving and forcing 'respect' will only get you resentment and fake respect.

And you sure can force respect if you're a tyrant but in the Antifa case it's more trying to be respected by tyranny (and failing at that).

Not trying to be offensive, but I think you're thinking about it too shallowly.

He doesn't mean "negotiate" as in sitting down, debating on terms and conditions, writing out the guidelines, and having everything documented and notarized. Negotiations can be physical, verbal, or abstract. If you're my boss, and I work for you, and I do a good job, I will "negotiate" for respect through an agreed-to "trade" of my hard work and your good management... or, in other words, I've earned it through that "trade." All "earnings" are a series of trades, which happen through some form of mutual negotiation.

As for the "fake respect," that was his point... he even said that, explicitly. He acknowledges that, through force, you can make him "respect" you, but (most likely) not the same way as if he had mutually agreed to respect you.

And your third point contradicts your second point, completely.

Which is why I said I disagreed slightly. You earn respect. 'Negotiating', as you pointed out, can be summarised as 'earning' too (which is why whydoismellbacon wrote earn/negotiate ).

And you are dead wrong that my third point contradicts anything I said. What I was getting at is that 'ensalving and forcing' by itself doesn't work. You won't ever get real respect if you're enslaving and forcing someone. However if you're a tyrant, the most ruthless son of a bitch in the area, you'll get people to truly respect you. Of course the majority of people living under your tyranny will resent you for it the same way anyone in the 'enslaving and forcing' example would but one of the reasons dictatorships work in the real world is that the inner circle of a system like that contains loyal, often fanatically devoted, supporters of the tyrant.

You're not being offensive, this is Voat, I wouldn't be offended if you told me to go fuck myself with a cactus. I think you might have read too much into my original answer though.

What I've learnt as salesman is that respect isn't earned, it's owed

Knock on some1's door, tell him "yo mothafuck, buy my shit nigger bitch!" and see how it turns out

Respect must be earned is warzone logic

You don't go in a restaurant and piss on everyone because they didn't earn your respect already

You don't do that

So...

It's not about being earned

But it can definitely be denied

Well there is a difference in being respectful and actually respecting. If I walk in to a restaurant I will be respectful, but that doesn't mean I respect them, they have to earn that.

Likewise I'm friendly with my neighbors but I'm not their friend.
