Having done some extensive work on Whiskey/cola interactions, I can safely say that the bubbles were knocked out of the cola for the second attempt.

Adding alcohol to a drink does not inhibit nucleation.

When I was building my Jack and Coke helmet, I ended up having to switch to flat coke because the coke was nucleating in the line and loosing suction. It's not that noticeable.

If you don't use alcohol just pour the soda down the side of the glass.
