In this case it was probably more just being silly than being lazy. I think laziness is the great driver of permanent solutions.

No doubt you're right. But it still results in us spending a lot of effort in 'being lazy'.
Henry Ford said something about giving his most difficult jobs to the lazy people because he knew they would find a simpler way. So it is not (always) wasted time.
