I am BenevolentModerator and I will be your moderator for /v/unsolvedmysteries. It is my pleasure to meet you all and facilitate discussion on the unsolved and unexplained mysteries that we are all so interested in.
As stated in the sidebar, this subverse is primarily dedicated to unsolved or unexplained mysteries. This includes everything from unsolved murders, missing persons, puzzling/unexplained phenomena, scientific & historical mysteries to cryptozoology, alien abductions and conspiracy†. It's all welcome and it is my desire to be inclusive of all relevant topics.
I will enforce site-wide rules as dictated by Atko and/or admins of voat.co. This is especially true with regards to:
Doxxing or instances where a suspect or user's real world identity (or information pertaining to) is posted, linked to, or otherwise made publically available in any fashion. This includes their real name, their home location, their occupation, etc. It's not okay to dig up their information on social media, google their personal information and compile this information into a post or comment on this subverse, regardless of what the intent is or how public that information may be elsewhere on the internet.
Witch hunting or any type of antagonistic mob behavior. This is especially relevant to our subverse in the case of suspects for certain unsolved mysteries. Please remember that everyone is innocent until found guilty in a court of law.
It's not okay to contact anyone (or their friends and family) who may happen to come up in discussions. If they want to participate in the discussion, they will and should do so on their own. Remember that many of these people may be in mourning or simply do not want to be in the public spotlight and we need to respect that. Do not bother or harrass them!
Other than that, I ask that you please read the following guidelines. These aren't rules, they are difficult to enforce and I won't enforce them, but if everyone followed these guidelines even a little bit, it would make the place better and more enjoyable for everyone.
Civility. Treat each other with respect and courtesy please.
Skepticism is welcome and encouraged but if you wish to be a skeptic, please follow guideline 1.
If you post a submission (i.e., a link), please take the time to make a comment on it to generate discussion or provide information to those who may be unable to access the link.
†Our subverse is one dedicated to unsolved mysteries of all types. There are, at times, substantial overlap with topics such as paranormal activity (e.g., in the case of hauntings), UFOs and things of that nature. Because these are very popular subtopics, I am concerned about the subverse being overpopulated by them. So I can only ask that if you took a picture of a UFO in your backyard and want feedback on it, use another subverse like /v/UFOs where you may get better and more specific feedback. Because this is a rather subjective matter of value and the subverse is officially open to all relevant topics, I will promise you that these topics will not be deleted or censored in any way (unless it is serious, e.g., repeated, organized trolling) This means if you don't like something, downvote it.
Principles of Moderation:
I aim to take a very hands off approach to moderation. I will allow anything and everything as long as it does not break the site rules (as well as those listed above) and is reasonably on-topic (in case of submissions.)
In the case of comments, I will not delete anything. If anyone says anything distasteful, rude or violates the guidelines (1, 4) above, it is up to you, the user and subscriber to downvote them.
Thankyou and I hope we can have some interesting mysteries to read about and discuss!
