I'm writing this to solicit your opinion on how you think this place should operate. I have already written some very basic rules as detailed here. I do not think they require any further justification. Other than that, it is my desire to keep this place as rule-free as possible but it is quite possible that you, the users, have something in mind that I may have missed. In fact, I want your opinion on several things:
On another community similar to this, there is a rule regarding the posting and discussion of recent (happened <1yr ago) "active" unsolved mysteries. I imagine that rule is to prevent wild speculation and rumor spreading that may impede any ongoing investigations of a crime by law enforcement. I'm at the moment, hesitant to make that an official rule because it will hamper discussion, the subverse is quite small, and there is no indication at the moment that any discussion here is a risk or impedence to law enforcement or official investigations. What are your thoughts on this?
Quality of Posts
As I said in the rules thread, I don't want to impose anything unnecessary on the users, but there may be a point where posting of things like memes, .gifs, jokes and things of a non-serious nature start drowning out any serious discussion. My ideal solution is to let the community downvote them instead of deleting them. What exactly are your thoughts on this? Would you rather there be a moderator that monitors the subverse for this stuff and actively delete them, or would you rather have it stay up? Keep in mind that anything any moderators do, including myself, will show up in the public mod log.
I realize that having the community do it instead will depend on the culture and the type of community we have, but we are quite small at the moment, and this may require some cultivation. At the moment, this isn't a serious concern at all. None of the submissions thus far have been any of the above, but it's good to plan ahead and I want to know what you think.
Deletions & Bans
I don't want to ban anyone and if anyone breaks the rules (doxxing, witchhunting, etc.), I will give them a warning. If they do it again, I will ban them.
I also don't want to remove any comments (except for anything that violates the rules). If someone says something truly offensive (racism, sexism, things of that nature), you need to downvote them. However, if this becomes a serious re-occuring problem, and the community at large wants something done about it, I (or another mod) will take action. What do you think about this?
There's also the issue of trolling. How do we define this?
I cannot monitor this sub all the time, so I will need help. So yes, there will be moderators in the future. I'm willing to assign mod powers to someone (or maybe several people) that agree with and adhere to my principles of moderation and aren't going to readily delete anything. For the most part, as a moderator you will do nothing at all.
Furthermore, the moderators that I want are people that are heavily invested and interested in the subject. That means they have to actually be interested in unsolved mysteries.
I also want them to be a member of good standing amongst the community and be a moderator of no more than 1 other community. This is because I don't want this subverse to be part of any moderator social group where you run into problems of cronyism and users being targeted because of whatever goes on in another subverse.
This is something I'm going to work on over the next week or so. RIght now, my intent to create flairs for every category of unsolved mystery. What are your thoughts and suggestions here?
So there may be things I've left out or haven't thought of. Let me know if there's anything serious that I should address. Thanks!
