Hydrogen actually. Helium doesn't go boom. They where using it because the U.S wouldn't sell helium to Germany and we had the only significant reserves at the time.

I read a couple of days ago that the paint they used contained iron oxide and aluminum do you want to make thermite? Cause that's how you make thermite. The dam thing was the fatherland of all bombs just waiting for an ignition source. Like a stormy night in N.J [just like tonight].
