True, but you also have to take into account that your great grandmother was planing on some of them dying as they grew up.

The number that reached adulthood was still far higher than successive generations, the OP's point stands.

The weak and unlucky died. The strong survived. Now, when people only have 1 or 2 kids, the parents coddle them because if even 1 dies it means the family genes may die out. Kids get coddled, don't grow normally, and end up being "adults" that think a dog is a replacement for procreation.

A dog is a dependant animal, not a human being. The potential contained in both species is nowhere near similar.
