This sub is far to quiet when we have such wonderful figures of late. Lets talk Combiner Wars Combiners.
Alright, so aside from Sky Lynx, we've seen how the basic molds for the current run of combiners work. (Not counting Devy, since he's a) in a class of his own IMO, and b) I don't have him yet, and won't for a while since I'm going for the Takara one)
So, here's what I think of them so far.
Best combiner: Defensor. Hands down. He's solid, he's posable. With the PE feet, more so. Works great. Looks great. Unlike Menasor, I don't feel that I need Groove for his chest, although the pics I've seen of that look good.
Runner up: Superion. He's alright, thighs are on the thin side though, the chest sometimes doesn't stay together, and some arm poses are limited because, at least with my aerialbots, can't hold much for weight before dipping down loosely.
Worse: Menasor by far. Limbs wise, he's not too bad save for Off Road basically stuck being a leg because for me, he will not stay pegged together as an arm. The Combiner form itself, so many issues.
First, the hips. The default configuration is ugly, and IMO not very functional if you want to do any poses. I opt to keep Motormasters legs in line with his robot form, with his knees facing backwards. Found I can balance him easier this way, but it's very touch and go.
Then there's the arms. Motormasters arms don't like to stay together for me. Trying to pose his arms is a chore because his arms turned shoulders don't stay pegged together, especially when with his legs he's already a precarious figure.
The torso itself, his bosom is too pronounced for my tastes closed, and open just looks weird, until you add Blackjack, and he doesn't like to stay in there. I know some people have trimmed the pegs Blackjack goes on, and that helps a little, but he still pops out too easily. On top of that, this mold ends up with a very thin looking torso.
I'm hoping the Perfect Effects upgrade kits will help. I have the feet and hands, which already helps a lot for stability, and I'm hoping the Menasor specific upgrade will help more, as it looks like the hip plate connects to the backpack in the kit.
Once I have the second kit, I might revise my option on Menasor.
For the stuff coming next year, Sky Lynx looks like he'll be a solid torso as well, but...honestly, I think I'd probably just keep him in his beast mode. Or maybe I'll swap him and Hot Spot out just to shake things up from time to time.
Am I a bit of an oddball on this, or do others feel similar about these sets?
