I always liked this story. It's depressing, sure, but It's one of the only stories that really explores the concept of immortality; most stop after all of the protagonist's loved ones are dead. This takes it to it's logical extreme. Immortality means never dying, ever. An immortal would live longer than the universe would exist, or, past the heat-death of the universe.

What degree would they continue to exist, though? Once the universe is done existence would end too, wouldn't it?

The comic seems to indicate that immortals will regenerate their form so long as some of their atoms exist, and that they will adapt to survive in any environment. I took away that as long as matter can exist, they will exist in some sentient form. At least that's what I took away from it.
