This is the ugly truth. We don't know those people. They exist in the abstract. Most people care impersonally and try to personalize it, and I'm not sure that's the right thing to do. When the news was a man in a suit, he would come out and read the facts succinctly, if it was important, like this, they'd show a clip of a comment by police and a representative or two and then read a report on grain futures. It kept it more impersonal and they boxed it off.

How many other teenagers died that day in various accidents? More than that.

The teenagers lives are symbols to us, and they're being used to stoke more emotionalism in already emotional people. And ratings.

News is a form of manipulation, I think it always has been. What makes it worse is it is pumped out as entertainment , in this latest case a star is being made out of the shooter . The best thing to if you want to encourage school shootings do is to give them publicity . The lunatics are being allowed to run the asylum .Too many people are employed in the industry and it is a feeding frenzy with common sense chucked out the window.

This is normal. The human brain is adapted to giving a fuck about 150-200 people at most. We are tribal mammals not eusocial insects. People living in cities of millions and trying to unite into countries of hundreds of millions is not natural. That doesn't necessarily make it a bad thing but it does come with the consequence of people not really caring about each other without some benefit to themselves.

I think the thing that bothers me most is I know the assholes reporting on it don't give a shit when they "bring us the news". In a time where we should be coming together these ass hats make it about politics to divide us again. If Challenger happened today it would be a partisan event instead of a national tragedy.

We've reached the point that watching a mass shooting story on TV feels like an apartment fire story. The local TV news reporter goes live at the scene in front of a burning apartment building and essentially says "Yep, shit's on fire."
