Sounds like stories of moral standing that were meant to teach people to not be greedy. The Native Americans also described huge dogs that stood 8 feet tall that white men rode...horses. They also exaggerated things that have been passed down via oral tradition through generations.

Back in Roman times they had huge dogs they would take into war. If they were to stand on their back legs they might be able to stand 6 or 7 feet.

I think some of the stories that were passed down could have been exaggerated but I also believe there is a lot of truth to the stories too. As in any language, describing something is limited by the size of the vocabulary. So they might say something like a great fireball came from the heavens. We would know it as a comet or meteorite. I also think about the game where the first person in a line is told to remember a short phrase that is whispered to them and they are suppose to tell the next person in the line what was said to them. And by the end of the line the story had completely changed. So it's likely that could have happen.

Giants have been a common story in Native American lore. I personally don't think it is too far fetched that giants existed. The tallest man alive is 8 ft 3 in tall. This website has some information about giants throughout human history.
